What is Tŷ Siamas?
Tŷ Siamas is a unique center dedicated to Welsh folk music. It was created to be a place where music and cultural activities could happen. The goal was to benefit both the local community and people visiting the area. It helps keep Welsh musical traditions alive and shares them with everyone.
How Tŷ Siamas Began
The idea for Tŷ Siamas came from Ywain Myfyr. He was a founder of a big music event called Sesiwn Fawr Dolgellau. The project was managed by Mabon ap Gwynfor. They wanted to build a center for music and cultural activities.
The Building and Its History
The team chose an old market hall in Dolgellau for the center. This building is called Neuadd Idris. It cost about £1.2 million to make the center. The money came from different places. These included Gwynedd Council, the European Union, and the Welsh Government.
After a lot of work, the center opened in June 2007. It was named after an 18th-century harp player. His name was Elis Sion Siamas. When it first opened, Tŷ Siamas had an interactive exhibit. This exhibit let visitors experience Welsh music. However, this part of the center later closed.
What Happened Next?
In July 2013, a group from the Senedd (the Welsh Parliament) looked at the project. They noted that a lot of public money was used. However, only a few part-time jobs were created.
A New Look
In July 2021, a new mural was added to Tŷ Siamas. This mural is inspired by music. It adds a fresh and artistic touch to the center.
