Tŷ Siamas is a special place in Dolgellau, Wales. It is known as the "National Centre for Folk Music" for the whole country. This center was created to be a hub for music and cultural activities. It welcomes both local people and visitors.
How Tŷ Siamas Started
The idea for Tŷ Siamas came from Ywain Myfyr. He was a founder of the Sesiwn Fawr Dolgellau, a big music event. The project was managed by Mabon ap Gwynfor. Their goal was to create a place for music and culture that would benefit everyone.
The center was built in an old market hall in Dolgellau called Neuadd Idris. The project cost about £1.2 million. Money came from different places. These included Gwynedd Council, the European Union, and the Welsh Government.
After a lot of work to fix up the building, Tŷ Siamas opened in June 2007. It was named after Elis Sion Siamas. He was a famous harp player from the 1700s.
What You Could See There
When Tŷ Siamas first opened, it had an interactive exhibition. This allowed visitors to experience Welsh music in a fun way. However, this part of the center later closed. Not enough people were interested in it.
In 2013, some people looked at how the money for Tŷ Siamas was used. They noted that even though a lot of public money was spent, only a few part-time jobs were created.
A New Look
In July 2021, a new mural was added to Tŷ Siamas. This artwork is inspired by music and adds to the center's look.
