TAE connector facts for kids

Kids Encyclopedia Facts

The TAE (which stands for Telekommunikations-Anschluss-Einheit in German) is a special type of phone plug and socket used mainly in Germany. Think of it like a specific shape of plug that connects your phone or other devices to the phone line in German homes.

There are two main kinds of TAE plugs and sockets:

  • TAE-F: The "F" stands for Fernsprechgerät, which means "telephone set". These are used specifically for telephones.
  • TAE-N: The "N" stands for Nebengerät, meaning "additional device". These are for other things that connect to the phone line, like answering machines or modems (which help computers connect to the internet).

How TAE Plugs Work

TAE plugs have small metal parts called "pins" inside them. These pins connect to different wires in the phone socket. Each pin has a job, like carrying the phone signal or helping the phone ring.

For example, some pins carry the main phone line signal. Older systems also had pins for things like an external bell or a ground connection, but these are not used much anymore. This system makes sure that the right device connects to the right part of the phone line.
