Tacitus (disambiguation) facts for kids

Kids Encyclopedia Facts

Tacitus was a very important Roman historian. He wrote about the history of the Roman Empire, especially during the time of the emperors. His writings help us understand a lot about what happened back then.

Who Was Tacitus?

Tacitus, whose full name was Publius Cornelius Tacitus, lived a long time ago, from about 56 AD to 120 AD. This was during the time of the Roman Empire, when emperors like Nero, Domitian, and Trajan ruled. Tacitus was not just a writer; he was also a Roman senator and a governor. This means he was involved in the government and saw many important events firsthand.

Early Life and Career

Tacitus was born into a wealthy family, probably in northern Italy or southern Gaul (modern-day France). He received an excellent education, studying rhetoric, which is the art of speaking and writing well. This training helped him become a powerful speaker and a clear writer.

He started his career as a lawyer and then moved into politics. He became a senator, which was a very important job in Rome. Senators helped make laws and advise the emperor. Later, he even served as a governor in the Roman province of Asia, which is now part of Turkey. His experiences in government gave him a unique view of Roman society and its leaders.

What Did Tacitus Write About?

Tacitus is famous for his two main historical works: The Annals and The Histories. These books cover a long period of Roman history, from the death of Emperor Augustus to the death of Emperor Domitian. He tried to write about events without being biased, meaning he tried to be fair and not take sides.

The Annals

The Annals is a book that tells the story of the Roman Empire from the death of Emperor Augustus in 14 AD to the death of Emperor Nero in 68 AD. This period includes the reigns of emperors like Tiberius, Caligula, Claudius, and Nero. Tacitus wrote about the lives of these emperors, their decisions, and the major events that happened during their rule. He often focused on the darker side of power, like corruption and tyranny.

The Histories

The Histories covers a shorter but very chaotic period, from the year 69 AD (the "Year of the Four Emperors") to the death of Emperor Domitian in 96 AD. This was a time of civil war and political instability in Rome. Tacitus described the struggles for power, the battles, and how different emperors rose and fell. Sadly, not all parts of The Annals and The Histories have survived to today.

Other Writings

Tacitus also wrote a few shorter books. One is called Germania, which describes the customs, geography, and tribes of the Germanic people who lived outside the Roman Empire. Another is Agricola, which is a biography of his father-in-law, Gnaeus Julius Agricola, a famous Roman general who conquered much of Britain. These works give us valuable information about different parts of the Roman world.

Why Is Tacitus Important?

Tacitus is important because he is one of the main sources of information we have about the early Roman Empire. His writings give us a detailed look at the lives of emperors, the workings of the Roman government, and the challenges faced by the empire. Historians today still study his works to understand this period. He was known for his sharp observations and his ability to analyze human nature and power.
