Marcus Claudius Tacitus facts for kids
Marcus Claudius Tacitus was a Roman Emperor who ruled from 275 to 276 AD. He lived from about 200 AD until his death in 276 AD.
Becoming Emperor
Marcus Claudius Tacitus was born in Italy. After Emperor Aurelian died, the Roman Senate chose Tacitus to be the new emperor. This was a very special moment. It was the last time the Senate ever picked a Roman emperor.
Challenges and Campaigns
When Tacitus became emperor, he faced a big problem. There were many soldiers for hire, called mercenaries, who had worked for the previous emperor. These soldiers were very unhappy. Their job to fight in Asia had been canceled. Because they were upset, they caused a lot of trouble. They even destroyed several Roman cities in Asia.
Emperor Tacitus quickly worked to control these mercenaries. He sent them to fight against other groups. He also planned to fight two different barbarian tribes, the Franks and the Alamanni. These tribes were causing problems in what is now France.
His Final Days
Tacitus was getting ready to lead his armies against these tribes. However, he suddenly became very ill. He died of a fever in 276 AD. His time as emperor was short, lasting only about a year.
