How Taco Mayo Started
Taco Mayo first opened its doors in Norman, Oklahoma, in May 1978. Just two years later, in 1980, the company started letting other people open Taco Mayo restaurants. This is called franchising. Three new stores opened in the Oklahoma City area.
Over the years, Taco Mayo grew from one small store to a bigger company. It now has 53 locations across Oklahoma and nearby states. The company once hoped to have 200 restaurants by the year 2000. While they didn't reach that big goal, they did open their 100th restaurant by 1997.
Learning from Mistakes
After trying to grow too fast, Taco Mayo learned an important lesson. They realized that opening many restaurants quickly wasn't always the best idea. Sometimes, they didn't find the right people to run the stores or the best places to build them.
