A sign for Taco Tuesday

Taco Tuesday is a fun tradition in many cities across the United States. It's when people often go out to eat tacos or other yummy Mexican dishes, usually served in a tortilla, on Tuesday nights. Many restaurants offer special deals, like "$1 fish tacos every Tuesday night!"

This custom is very popular in big cities, especially in the beach towns of Southern California. Taco Tuesday is a bit like Happy Hour. Restaurants decide if they want to join in, what hours they offer specials, and what deals they have. It's a great way to enjoy tasty food at a good price!

Who Can Use "Taco Tuesday"?

You might think a common phrase like "Taco Tuesday" belongs to everyone. But a fast-food restaurant called Taco John's, located in Wyoming, actually got a trademark for "Taco Tuesday" in 1989. This means they tried to stop other restaurants from using the phrase.

Taco John's trademark covers most of the United States. However, in New Jersey, a restaurant called Gregory's Restaurant & Bar in Somers Point trademarked the term earlier, in 1982.

LeBron James and the Trademark

In 2019, famous basketball player LeBron James started sharing videos on Instagram about his family's weekly taco dinners. He called them "Taco Tuesdays." He even tried to get a trademark for the term himself! He wanted to use it for things like online videos, podcasts, and social media.

However, the United States Patent and Trademark Office said "no." They explained that "Taco Tuesday" is a very common phrase. It's used by many people and just describes an ordinary, well-known idea. Because it's so common, they decided no one person or company could truly "own" the phrase.

Even with trademarks, many people still use "Taco Tuesday" widely. Lots of taco fans believe that such a popular phrase should be free for everyone to use.
