History of Tacámbaro

Early History

Tacámbaro has a very long history, dating back to before the arrival of Europeans. The Purépecha people took control of the city in the early 1300s.

In 1528, a Spanish explorer named Cristóbal de Oñate was given control of the area. The town was officially started in 1535. Five years later, a chapel and a convent were built in the town.

By 1631, Tacámbaro became the main town for a group of eight smaller communities. However, many people had been lost due to diseases, especially in 1575.

In 1706, a priest named Fray Francisco de Fonseca became the town's leader. He helped plan the streets, brought in water sources, and rebuilt the convent.

Modern History

After Mexico's war for independence, many farms and ranches in Tacámbaro were destroyed. The town was left in ruins. However, people quickly began to rebuild. This helped Tacámbaro grow and gain new importance.

In 1828, the governor, José Salgado, declared Tacámbaro a "villa," which is a type of town. Three years later, the municipality was officially formed under a new law.

In 1859, Governor General Epitacio Huerta declared Tacámbaro a city. He named it Ciudad de Codallos to honor General Juan José Codallos, who fought in the war for independence. The local people asked for the name to be changed to Tacámbaro de Codallos, and this was accepted.

In 1865, an important battle took place in Tacámbaro. This happened during the French Intervention in Mexico.

During the Mexican Revolution in late 1919, Tacámbaro briefly served as the capital city of the state.

In November 2012, Tacámbaro received a special honor. It was named a Pueblo Mágico, which means "Magical Town." It was the sixth municipality in Michoacán to get this special title.
