Taichung's 7th Redevelopment Zone facts for kids
The 7th Redevelopment Zone in Taichung is a super modern area in the Xitun District and Nantun District. Many local people call it "Qiqi" (七期) for short.
This zone is right next to the 3rd, 4th, and 5th Redevelopment Zones. A long time ago, before this area was planned, it was mostly farmland with just a few small houses and narrow roads. But today, it's a bustling city center! It's where Taichung's new city government buildings are, and it's the main business hub of the city. You'll find wide roads, cool apartment buildings, big department stores, and tall office towers that light up brightly at night. Plus, there are many universities nearby, like Tunghai University and Feng Chia University.
How the Area Grew
The story of the 7th Redevelopment Zone began in 1986. That's when the Taichung City Government decided to turn this farming area into something new. It was located south of what is now Taiwan Boulevard and west of Wenxin Road.
The first idea was to create a second business center. This would help take some pressure off the old downtown area, known as the Central District. But as Taichung grew bigger and more people moved in, the city's main center slowly shifted towards the west.
In February 1990, the plan for the 7th Redevelopment Zone officially started. It covered a huge area of about 353 hectares. It cost a lot of money, around 5.54 billion New Taiwan dollars, making it the most expensive development project at that time. All the land work was finished by November 1992.
Then, in 1996, the Taichung City Government decided to move the main city hall from the old downtown to this new zone. This made the 7th Redevelopment Zone the new official center of the city. So, after the year 2000, this zone slowly became the main business district of Taichung, taking over from the old downtown.
