The Taifa of Murviedro and Sagunto was a small Muslim kingdom that existed for a very short time in medieval Spain. It was one of many "taifas" (pronounced TIE-fahs), which were independent Muslim states that appeared after the big Umayyad Caliphate of Córdoba broke apart.

This kingdom was located in what is now the area around the city of Sagunto in Spain. It only lasted for six years, from 1086 to 1092.

What Was a Taifa Kingdom?

During the Middle Ages, much of Spain was ruled by Muslims. This period is often called Al-Andalus. When the main Muslim government became weak, many smaller kingdoms popped up. These were called taifas. Each taifa was like its own mini-country with its own ruler.

The Taifa of Murviedro and Sagunto was one of these small kingdoms. It was important because it was part of a time when many different rulers and groups were fighting for control in Spain.

Who Ruled Murviedro and Sagunto?

The Taifa of Murviedro and Sagunto had only one known ruler during its short life. He was called Abu 'Isa Lubbun. An emir (pronounced eh-MEER) is a title for a ruler or prince in some Muslim countries.

  • Abu 'Isa Lubbun: He ruled from 1086 to 1092.

Why Did This Kingdom End?

The Taifa of Murviedro and Sagunto did not last long because a powerful group called the Almoravids took control. The Almoravids were a strong Muslim empire from North Africa. They came to Spain and conquered many of the smaller taifa kingdoms, including Murviedro and Sagunto, in 1092. This brought an end to its independence.
