Kids Encyclopedia Facts

Tajana Šimunić Rosing is an American computer scientist and computer engineer. She is an expert in how computers work inside other devices. This includes things like embedded systems, which are computers built into larger systems. She also studies cyber-physical systems, which combine computers with physical objects, and how to make smart city technology work well.

Her work focuses on making these systems reliable, meaning they work correctly all the time. She also looks at how to control their temperature and save energy. Tajana Rosing is a professor at the University of California, San Diego. There, she leads a special lab called the System Energy Efficiency Lab. She also holds an important position called the Fratamico Endowed Chair.

Early Life and Education

Tajana Rosing started her journey in computer science by studying at Northern Arizona University. She graduated from there in 1992. After that, she continued her studies at the University of Arizona. In 1993, she earned a master's degree in electrical and computer engineering.

After finishing her studies, she worked as an engineer. She worked at companies like Altera and then HP Labs. While working at HP Labs, she went back to school. She became a graduate student at Stanford University. She earned another master's degree in 2000. Then, in 2001, she completed her Ph.D. Her special research was about designing systems that use energy wisely. In 2005, she moved from HP Labs to become a professor at the University of California, San Diego.

Achievements and Awards

Tajana Rosing has received several important awards for her work. In 2016, the University of California, San Diego, honored her. They gave her the John J. and Susan M. Fratamico Endowed Chair. This is a special recognition in the Jacobs School of Engineering.

In 2018, she was named an IEEE Fellow. This is a high honor from the Institute of Electrical and Electronics Engineers. She received it for her important contributions to managing power and making computer chips reliable. These chips are often called Systems-on-Chip.

More recently, in 2021, she was named an ACM Fellow. This award comes from the Association for Computing Machinery. She earned this for her work in managing power, heat, and reliability in computer systems. These awards show how much her work helps make computers better and more efficient.
