Taleena Simon's Rugby Journey
Early Days in Rugby League
Taleena started playing rugby league when she was young. She played for a team called the Redfern All Blacks as a junior player. In 2010, she made her first big appearance as a senior player for the Guildford Owls.
Switching to Rugby Union
After a shoulder injury, Taleena tried a different sport. She switched to rugby union in 2014. She joined the Australia women's national rugby sevens team. This was a big moment because she became the first Aboriginal woman to sign a full-time professional contract with the team. Rugby sevens is a faster version of rugby union with fewer players.
Return to Rugby League
In 2017, Taleena returned to her first sport, rugby league. She played for the Redfern All Blacks again. This time, it was in the Harvey Norman NSW Women's Premiership. In 2018, she played for the South Sydney Rabbitohs in the same league. She was the top try-scorer for that season. She also represented NSW City at the National Women's Championships. These championships were held on the Gold Coast.
Joining the Sydney Roosters
On June 17, 2018, Taleena Simon signed with the Sydney Roosters. She was one of 15 special players chosen for their team. These players are called "marquee signings."
State and National Appearances
Just a few days later, on June 22, 2018, Taleena made her debut for New South Wales. This was in a big game called "Origin." Her team won 16–10 against Queensland.
In the first round of the 2018 NRL Women's Premiership, Taleena played her first game for the Sydney Roosters. She started as a winger. Her team lost 10–4 to the New Zealand Warriors.
On February 20, 2021, Taleena played for the Indigenous All Stars. This team represents Indigenous Australian players. They played against the Māori All Stars. In 2021, she also joined the Glebe Dirty Reds. This was their first season in the NSWRL Women's Premiership.
