She was known for her amazing work as a sculptor, someone who designs sets for plays and movies, and an illustrator for books. In 1942, she was given the special title of Honored Artist of the Georgian SSR. This was a big award that recognized her important contributions to art.

About Tamar Abakelia

Tamar Abakelia was born in a town called Khoni, which was part of the Russian Empire at the time. She loved art from a young age. She went to the Tbilisi State Academy of Arts and finished her studies there in 1929. Later, starting in 1938, she even taught art at the same academy where she learned!

Her Family Life

Tamar Abakelia's family faced some tough times. Her father, Grigol Abakelia, and her uncle, Ioseb Abakelia, were important people in Georgia. Sadly, they were both victims of a difficult period in history in 1938.

Tamar Abakelia was married to a poet and writer named Karlo Kaladze. They had one son together, who also became a sculptor, just like his mother. His name was Gulda Kaladze.

Her Artistic Creations

Tamar Abakelia created many different kinds of art.

  • Illustrations: She drew pictures for books by famous writers like Nikolay Tikhonov, Shota Rustaveli, and Vazha-Pshavela. She also illustrated a well-known story called David of Sasun.
  • Theater and Film Design: Tamar also designed the sets for plays at famous theaters like the Rustaveli and Marjanishvili theaters. She even designed costumes for movies such as Arsena (1937), Giorgi Saakadze (1942), and David Guramishvili (1945).
  • Sculpture: A lot of her most important work was in sculpture. She was very good at making sculptures that looked lively and had smooth, artistic shapes. She helped Georgian sculpture become even better during her time. One of her famous sculptures is a series of carvings on the Museum of Marxism–Leninism building in Tbilisi. These carvings showed different stages of how Georgia was developing at that time.

Tamar Abakelia passed away in Tbilisi in 1953. She was buried in a special place called the Didube Pantheon, where many important Georgian people are laid to rest. Her art continues to be remembered and admired.
