Tamariu is a beautiful coastal town in Spain. It's one of three charming towns that belong to the area of Palafrugell. You can find Tamariu in the province of Girona, in a region called Catalonia. It's also part of the famous Costa Brava, which is a stunning coastal area in northeastern Spain. Tamariu is about 110 kilometers (70 miles) south of the French border.

What's in a Name?

The name Tamariu comes from the many tamarisk trees in the town. These trees grow along the promenade, which is a lovely path by the beach. This path separates the sandy shore from the town's narrow streets. Tamariu used to be a small fishing village. Even today, you can still see fishing boats pulled up onto the beach. Now, there are also hotels, seafood restaurants, cafes, and bars.

Fun Things to Do in Tamariu

Tamariu is surrounded by rugged cliffs covered with pine trees. These cliffs meet the clear waters of the Mediterranean Sea. The water here is some of the cleanest on the coast.

Enjoy the Beach and Water

The main beach faces south and has a special "blue flag" award. This means it's very clean and safe for swimming. The beach slopes gently into the water, which is great for families. Tamariu is also a popular spot for diving. There are many underwater caves to explore. You can also discover the submerged mountain called Llosa de Cala Nova.

Explore the Coastal Path

The GR 92 is a long-distance walking path that runs along the entire Mediterranean coast of Spain. This path goes right through Tamariu.

Walking North

If you walk north, the path goes inland through forests. You will see pine trees and cork oak trees. It leads to the beautiful beach at Aiguablava. After that, the path follows the coast to Fornells.

Walking South

If you walk south, the path follows a track above the shoreline. It can be a bit rough in some places. This path leads to the beach at Cala Pedrosa [ca]. You will also pass the Sant Sebastià lighthouse [ca]. Finally, the path takes you to the town of Llafranc.

Aigua Gelida: A Nearby Area

Aigua Gelida is the biggest residential area near Tamariu. It fills the space between Tamariu and Aiguablava. Aigua Gelida has a small sandy cove. This cove is mostly for people living in the Cala Nostra area, which is only about 300 meters away. Many modern villas have been built in Aigua Gelida recently.
