Tammy Lynne Stoner (born October 26, 1968) is an American writer and artist. She helps create The Gertrude Conference, which started in 2024. This conference is connected to Gertrude, a literary journal that has been around for 25 years. Tammy Lynne Stoner is also the author of a book called Sugar Land. Today, she lives in Portland, Oregon.

About Tammy Lynne Stoner's Life
Early Life and Education
Tammy Lynne Stoner was born in Midland, Texas. She lived in a few different places like El Paso, Texas, and Gulfport, Mississippi. Her family eventually settled in Mechanicsburg, Pennsylvania. After going to Catholic school for twelve years, she went to college.
Stoner worked hard to pay for her education at Temple University. She had many different jobs, including being an artist's model, a waitress, a house cleaner, and a bookstore manager.
Moving Around and Starting a Family
In 1995, Stoner moved to South Korea and taught English in Busan for a year. Then, in 1996, she moved back to the United States, settling in San Francisco. The next year, she moved to Southern California, where she lived for ten years. She worked as a manager for a publishing company. She later left her job to start a family and raise her son.
In 2007, Stoner earned her Master of Fine Arts (M.F.A) degree from Antioch University. That same year, she moved to Portland, Oregon, with her son.

Creating Dottie's Magic Pockets
In 2006, Tammy Lynne Stoner's son asked her why there weren't many families like theirs on kids' TV shows. This question inspired Stoner to write Dottie's Magic Pockets. This film was directed by her friend, Andrea Maxwell, and stars Jennifer Plante.
Dottie's Magic Pockets was released in 2007 and became very popular. It was shown at many film festivals, including ones in London, Melbourne, Toronto, Outfest, and Frameline. Now, you can find Dottie in over 100 libraries across the United States and Canada.
Working with Gertrude Journal
From 2011 to 2014, Stoner was the fiction editor for Gertrude Journal. This is a literary and arts journal based in Portland, Oregon. In 2017, she became the publisher of the journal. In 2023, Gertrude Journal grew into The Gertrude Writing Conference. Stoner co-founded this conference with Beth Marshea, who was her agent at the time from Ladderbird Agency.
Other Short Films and Writing
Stoner has also written several short films. She was part of the team for Second Shot, a film starring Jill Bennett. Stoner and Jill Bennett had also worked together in a performance group called the Sugar Daddy show from 2000 to 2003. In this group, Stoner performed as Frankie Roundfirmenhigh.
Tammy Lynne Stoner's shorter writings have appeared in many different journals and collections of stories. She has been nominated for important awards like the Million Writers Award and two Pushcart Prizes. She was also an Artist-in-Resident with Sou'Wester and a writing fellow with the VCCA.
Her Novel Sugar Land
In 2018, her first novel, Sugar Land, was released by Red Hen Press. The book won an IPPY Award and was a finalist for the Forewords Book of the Year Award in 2018. It was also considered for other awards, including the Crooks Corner Book Prize.
Critics have praised Sugar Land. Kirkus Review called it a "ravishing debut." The New York Journal of Books said it was "writing at its finest." Booklist described it as "surprising and exhilarating." Bookpage wrote that it is "a novel of exploration, bravery and redemption, with keen insight into race, class, gender identity and social norms, Sugar Land is the story of a woman learning to come home to herself."
In 2019, Stoner appeared on an episode of Storytellers Telling Stories. She read a part from Sugar Land while the music group Pretty Gritty played Americana music.
Future Projects
Tammy Lynne Stoner is now working on turning Sugar Land into a TV series. She is also developing other film projects. The pilot episode for the Sugar Land TV series has been a finalist in many film festivals, including Portland, Atlanta, New York, Reno-Tahoe, and Seattle. It also received an Honorable Mention at the Santa Barbara 2022 Film Festival. A short film called "Nana Dara is Gay", which shows what the TV series might be like, was shown at the 2023 American Pavilion at the Cannes Film Festival.
She is also developing another TV series called "Limbo." Its pilot episode, "Dipso Maniac," Won Best Pilot out of more than 1,000 scripts submitted to the Portland Screenwriting Awards in 2023.
