Tandy & Foster was an American company that designed buildings. It was active from 1908 to 1914. The company was based in New York City and worked on projects in New York State and New Jersey.

Meet Tandy & Foster

This company was started in 1908 by two talented architects: Vertner Woodson Tandy (who lived from 1885 to 1949) and George Washington Foster (who lived from 1866 to 1923).

Pioneering Architects

Vertner Woodson Tandy made history as the first African-American architect to be officially allowed to design buildings in New York State. George Washington Foster was also a pioneer. He was one of the very first African-American architects to get his license in New Jersey in 1908. Later, he also got his license in New York in 1916.

Working Separately

Tandy and Foster worked together for six years. In 1914, they decided to end their partnership. After that, both architects continued to design buildings on their own. George Washington Foster got his New York license by 1915, allowing him to work independently there.

Their Important Project

Tandy & Foster designed several buildings. One of their notable projects was a church in New York City.
