Tanjong Pagar MRT station facts for kids

Kids Encyclopedia Facts

Tanjong Pagar MRT Station (EW15) is an underground train station in Singapore. It's part of the Mass Rapid Transit (MRT) system and is located on the East West Line. You can find it in the Downtown Core area, which is a busy part of Singapore. This station is super helpful for people who work or live in the nearby Shenton Way and Robinson Road areas, especially business people.

Right now, the station is surrounded by new buildings, including the Tanjong Pagar Centre. This building is the tallest skyscraper in Singapore, standing at 290 metres! It's usually hard to build such tall buildings because of rules about how high things can be near the Paya Lebar Airbase, but Tanjong Pagar Centre got special permission.

When Did Tanjong Pagar MRT Station Open?

Tanjong Pagar MRT Station first opened its doors on 12 December 1987. It was part of an expansion that connected the train system further, including to Outram Park.

How Has the Station Changed Over Time?

In 2004, the station was made bigger and better to help people with disabilities get around more easily. A new exit, called Exit I, was opened later to improve access.

Before the opening of Tanjong Pagar Centre (which has Exit J), the station had many exits. All these exits are connected by an underground walkway, making it easy to get to different streets and buildings nearby. Here are some of the main exits:

  • A: Peck Seah Street
  • B: Maxwell Road
  • C: Anson Road
  • D: Prince Edward Road
  • E: AXA Tower (this building used to be called Temasek Tower)
  • F: Robinson Road
  • G: Telok Ayer (near Amoy Street Market)
  • H: Springleaf Street

The faregates, which are the gates you go through to enter or exit the station, have also been updated. The ones at most parts of the station were replaced on 12 October 2012. The faregates at Exit I were updated more recently, on 20 August 2017.
