Tantauco Park (Spanish: Parque Tantauco) is a special nature area located at the southern tip of Chiloé Island in Chile. It's a private reserve, meaning it's owned and managed by a foundation, not the government. The park covers about 1,180 square kilometers, which is a huge space dedicated to protecting nature.

This amazing park was created in 2005 by Sebastián Piñera, who was a successful businessman and later became the President of Chile. He wanted to protect the unique plants and animals found in this part of Chile. The park is run by a group called Fundación Cultura y Sociedad. Tantauco Park is open to visitors and has two places where you can camp. It also has over 150 kilometers of trails for hiking and exploring.

Exploring Tantauco Park

Tantauco Park is a fantastic place for ecotourism, which means traveling to enjoy nature without harming it. The park is known for its incredible variety of life, called biodiversity. It has a nearly untouched Valdivian temperate rainforest, which is a type of forest found in this region. This forest gets a lot of rain, about 2,500 millimeters every year.

Animals You Might Spot

Many special animals live in Tantauco Park, including some that are in danger of disappearing forever. If you're lucky, you might see the Huillín otter, which is a type of otter that lives in rivers. Another rare animal is the Chilote fox, a small fox found only in this area. The park's waters are also home to the giant Blue whale.

Plants to Discover

The park also protects unique plants. One important tree is the Guaitecas cypress. This tree is very old and special to the region. Protecting these plants and animals helps keep the forest healthy for future generations.
