Tarzan, Texas facts for kids
Tarzan is a small, quiet community located in Martin County, Texas. It's what we call an unincorporated community. This means it's not officially a city or town with its own local government. Instead, it's part of the larger county.
Back in 1990, Tarzan was a very small place. It had about six homes, a post office, and a cotton gin. There was also a store that served the local farms. Students living in Tarzan go to schools in the Grady Independent School District.
You might wonder how this place got its name! Tarzan was actually named after the famous fictional character, Tarzan. This makes it one of the many places in the world with a really unusual name!
About Tarzan
How Tarzan Got Its Name
The story of Tarzan's name began in 1926. A couple named Tant and Viola Lindsay moved to the area. At that time, the community was known as South Plains.
The Lindsays opened a general store. They wanted to add a post office to help the local people. However, the U.S. Postal Service told them there was already a "South Plains" post office in Texas. They needed a new name for their community.
Tant Lindsay wrote down several possible names for the post office application. His wife, Viola, suggested he add "Tarzan" to the list. Tant liked reading the Tarzan books by Edgar Rice Burroughs, so he added it. Just two weeks later, the Lindsays got good news! Their application for the Tarzan post office was approved. By 1983, this post office was serving about 500 customers.
