How the Festival Started

The Taste of Asia festival began in 2003. It was created during a time when people were worried about a health issue called severe acute respiratory syndrome (SARS). The main goal was to help the local businesses and economy get back on track.

Who Organizes the Festival?

The Federation of Chinese Canadians in Markham (FCCM) organizes the Taste of Asia. This group has been involved in many events since it started. They work to share Chinese community and culture. Besides the Taste of Asia, they also help with other events. These include Chinese New Year celebrations and the Mid-Autumn Festival. The FCCM wants to teach people about Chinese culture. They also want to help different cultures connect and appreciate each other. The FCCM has worked with many other helpful groups too. These include the United Way of York Region and the Canadian Red Cross.

Where the Festival Takes Place

In 2021 and 2022, the Taste of Asia festival was held on Kennedy Road and Steeles Avenue East. This spot is right on the border between Markham and Scarborough. It's also super close to Pacific Mall. Pacific Mall is the biggest indoor Asian shopping mall in North America! During the festival, the part of Kennedy Road between Clayton Drive and Steeles Avenue East is closed. This makes space for all the festival booths and visitors.
