Nationality Russia

Tatiana Birshtein (born December 20, 1928 – died February 23, 2022) was a brilliant Russian scientist. She was known for her work in molecular science. Tatiana specialized in the physics of polymers. Polymers are like long chains of tiny building blocks. They are found in many things around us, from plastics to our own DNA!

In 2007, she received a very special award. It was the L'Oréal-UNESCO Award for Women in Science. This award celebrates amazing women scientists from all over the world.

Tatiana's Life and Work

Tatiana Birshtein was born in a city called Leningrad in 1928. Today, this city is known as Saint Petersburg. She went to Leningrad State University to study.

Tatiana became an expert in the theoretical physics of polymers. She worked at a place called the Institute of Macromolecular Compounds. This institute is in Saint Petersburg. It was started by Professor Mikhail Volkenstein in the 1950s.

Tatiana dedicated her whole life to science. She published many papers about polymers. She also studied how DNA stays stable. DNA is the instruction book for all living things! She also looked at the structure of other tiny organic molecules.

On February 22, 2007, Tatiana received the L'Oréal-UNESCO Award. She was given $100,000 for her amazing work. The award recognized her "contribution to the understanding of the shapes, sizes and motions of large molecules." This means she helped us understand how big molecules look, how much space they take up, and how they move.

Tatiana Birshtein passed away on February 23, 2022. She was 93 years old. Her work helped us learn so much about the tiny building blocks of our world.
