Career
In 1980, Tatyana Mamonova was asked to leave the Soviet Union. Her group, first called Woman and Russia, was a non-profit organization. It worked to support the rights of women from the Soviet Union. It also helped Russian-speaking women share their ideas and needs with people around the world.
She edited and published a secret magazine called Woman and Russia Almanac. This magazine is now known as Woman and Earth Almanac. It was an art and writing journal that featured the first collection of feminist writings from the Soviet Union. Before she left her home city of St. Petersburg, Russia, she was part of a group of artists who didn't follow official rules. She also worked as a writer and TV journalist.
In 1987, Tatyana joined the Women's Institute for Freedom of the Press (WIFP). This is an American non-profit group that helps women communicate more. It also connects the public with media created by women.
She wrote a piece called "It's time we began with ourselves" for a book published in 1984. This book was an anthology (a collection of writings) called Sisterhood Is Global: The International Women's Movement Anthology. It was put together by Robin Morgan.
Since leaving her home country, Tatyana Mamonova has continued to edit and publish Woman and Earth Almanac. She also publishes two other magazines: Succes d'estime (since 2001) and Fotoalbum: Around the World (since 2004). She still leads her group, which is now called Woman and Earth Global Eco-Network. She has written four books in the United States.
