The Taveuni silktail (Lamprolia victoriae) is a special bird found only on the Fiji islands. It's a beautiful bird that might remind you of a tiny bird-of-paradise, but it's actually a close relative of the fantails.
A scientist named Finsch gave the bird its name. He named it after Princess Victoria, who was the oldest daughter of Queen Victoria.

What Does the Taveuni Silktail Look Like?
The Taveuni silktail is a small black bird. It is about 12 centimeters (4.7 inches) long. It weighs around 16 to 21 grams (0.56 to 0.74 ounces).
This bird has long, rounded wings and a short, rounded tail. The male bird has feathers that are velvet black. Its head and chest sparkle with shiny, metallic blue colors. It also has a silky white patch on its lower back. This white patch goes down most of its tail. The very end of its tail is black.
Differences Between Males, Females, and Young Birds
Female Taveuni silktails look a lot like the males. However, their feathers are not as shiny. Young birds are not as bright as the adults. They might have duller, light brown areas on their backs.
The eyes of this bird are dark. Its legs and beak are blackish. The beak is strong and curves slightly at the end. Its legs are long, and its feet are very strong.
Where Does the Taveuni Silktail Live?
The Taveuni silktail lives only in the forests of Taveuni island in Fiji. It can be found in many places on the island.
It prefers to live in old, wet rainforests. You can also find it in smaller forest areas. Sometimes, it lives in places changed by humans, like forests where trees have been cut down. It can also be found in tree farms that are close to natural forests.
How Does the Taveuni Silktail Behave?
This bird can be hard to spot because it's quite shy. But sometimes, it can be very friendly and let people get close. It is usually most active when the sun is coming up. You might see it alone or in small groups.
What Does the Taveuni Silktail Eat?
The Taveuni silktail mainly eats insects. It also enjoys eating worms and other small creatures called arthropods.
Protecting the Taveuni Silktail
The Taveuni silktail only lives in a small area. Because forests are being cleared for farms and other uses, this bird was once listed as "vulnerable" in 1994. This means it was at risk of becoming endangered.
However, in 2006, its status improved to "near threatened." This means it's still a concern, but not as much at risk as before. Even though its home is shrinking, the forest areas are not yet completely broken up. The Taveuni silktail lives in special protected areas like the Ravilevu Nature Reserve and the Bouma National Heritage Park. These parks help keep its home safe.
