The Highest Peak: Profitis Elias

The very top of the Taygetus range is a peak named Profitis Elias. It stands at 2,407 meters (7,897 feet) above sea level. This makes it the highest point in the entire Peloponnese. Many hikers and climbers enjoy trying to reach its summit.

Where is Taygetus Located?

The Taygetus range is located in Southern Greece. It runs between two important areas: the Eurotas River valley to the east and the Messenian Gulf to the west. The city of Sparti is located on the eastern side, with the mountains rising dramatically behind it.

How the Mountains Were Formed

The Taygetus mountains were formed over millions of years by powerful forces deep within the Earth. Greece is located in an area where large pieces of the Earth's crust, called tectonic plates, are moving and colliding. This area is known as the Hellenic arc.

One plate is slowly sliding underneath another in a process called "subduction."
This movement causes the land to push up, creating mountains.
