The Teachout Building is an important historic building. It is located in the East Village area of Des Moines, Iowa, in the United States. This building was added to the National Register of Historic Places in 1999. This is a special list of places important to history.
In 2019, the Teachout Building became part of a larger historic area. This area is called the East Des Moines Commercial Historic District.
Building History
The Teachout Building is named after Horace E. Teachout. He was a developer who helped plan the East Village area. In 1911, he started planning for this building. He wanted it to be the tallest building on the east side of Des Moines.
The building was finished in 1912. A famous architectural company, Proudfoot, Bird and Rawson, designed it. They used a style called Early Commercial. This building was one of the few tall buildings this company designed.
Changes Over Time
Work to update the building started in the 1970s. However, the renovation was not finished. A new freeway, Interstate 235, was built. This freeway allowed people to easily go around this part of Des Moines. Because of this, the area became less popular.
The Teachout Building then sat empty for many years. It was finally updated in the 1990s. Today, the building has shops and offices. There is also a private home on the sixth floor.
