Tecpancaltzin Iztaccaltzin was an important ruler of the ancient Toltec Empire. He was the ninth Tlatoani, which means "ruler" or "emperor," of the Toltec people. His time as ruler began around the year 833.

It's a bit tricky to know the exact dates for Toltec history. This is because their ancient calendar is not fully understood by historians today.

Tecpancaltzin's Reign

Tecpancaltzin Iztaccaltzin became the Toltec ruler after his mother, Xihuiquenitzin Ziuhcaltzin, passed away in 833. He ruled for many years, guiding the Toltec Empire.

The Invention of Sugar

A special event happened in 843 during Tecpancaltzin's rule. A Toltec man named Papantzin made a new kind of sugar. This sugar was created from the Agave plant.

Papantzin and his daughter, Xochitl, brought this new sugar as a gift to Emperor Tecpancaltzin.

Xochitl and the Succession

Tecpancaltzin was very impressed by Xochitl. He wanted her to stay at his palace. He spoke with Papantzin, explaining that if Xochitl stayed, she could become the ruler of the Toltecs after him.

Tecpancaltzin and Xochitl had a son together, named Meconetzin.

In 846, Xochitl considered leaving the palace. However, Tecpancaltzin convinced her to remain. He promised that their son, Meconetzin, would be the next Tlatoani after him.

End of His Rule

Tecpancaltzin Iztaccaltzin's time as emperor ended around 877 or 885. He was removed from power, but he was likely still alive.

After Tecpancaltzin's rule ended, Xochitl became the empress. Later, after her death, their son Meconetzin became the new emperor of the Toltecs.
