Miles Teel Bivins (born November 22, 1947 – died October 26, 2009) was an important American diplomat and politician. A diplomat is someone who represents their country in other nations. A politician is someone who works in government.

He was a member of the Republican Party. He served in the Texas Senate for the 31st district. He also worked as the 18th U.S. Ambassador to Sweden.

Growing Up and School

Teel Bivins was born in Amarillo, Texas. His parents were Betty Teel Lovell and Lee Truscott Bivins. He had three brothers.

He went to the Colorado Academy for his early education. Later, he attended Tulane University. He earned his Bachelor of Arts degree there in 1970. He also studied at Southern Methodist University's law school. He earned his law degree in 1974.

His Career in Public Service

Serving in the Texas Senate

In 1989, Teel Bivins was elected to the Texas Senate. He represented the 31st district. He took over from another politician named Bill Sarpalius.

He was known for his work in the Texas Senate. The magazine Texas Monthly listed him as one of the "Best and Worst Legislators" four times. In 2004, he left the Senate. Kel Seliger was elected to take his place.

Becoming an Ambassador

After leaving the Texas Senate, Bivins took on a new role. President George W. Bush chose him to be the 18th U.S. Ambassador to Sweden. An ambassador is a country's official representative to another country.

He served in this important role until 2006. He became ill and decided to step down from his position. Michael M. Wood then became the new ambassador.

After his time as ambassador, Bivins returned to Texas. He supported education by creating the Teel Bivins Chair of Political Science. This is a special teaching position at West Texas A&M University.

Personal Life

Teel Bivins passed away on October 26, 2009. He was 61 years old. He died in Texas.
