Tegler Building facts for kids
The Tegler Building was a really big and important office building in Edmonton, Alberta. It was built a long time ago, in 1912. When it was finished, it was the largest building in all of western Canada! It was huge, about 15,750 square meters. Even though it was named a historic place in 1981, the city council later decided to remove that title. Sadly, the building was taken down on December 12, 1982.

Building a Giant: The Tegler Building Story
Who Was Robert Tegler?
The building was named after Robert Tegler. He was a smart businessman who came to Edmonton in the early 1900s. He saw a lot of chances to succeed in the city. That's why he decided to build the Tegler Building.
Designing a Landmark
Robert Tegler chose a great spot for his new building. It was at the corner of Elizabeth Street and First Street. Today, these streets are known as 102 Avenue and 101 Street. The exact address was 10189 101 St NW.
He hired an architect named Herbert Alton Magoon. Mr. Magoon designed a six-story building. It was about 100 feet (30 meters) long. It was also 70 feet (21 meters) wide and 80 feet (24 meters) high.
Construction and Expansion
Building the Tegler Building started in 1911. It was finished quickly, by early 1912. It became a very busy place.
By 1913, even more space was needed! So, Robert Tegler began to expand the building. He started building new floors on top of the Edmonton Journal building next door. Later, when the Edmonton Journal moved out, he built down to the ground.
A Building's Lasting Legacy
Even though the Tegler Building was taken down in 1982, parts of it still live on. The Tegler Foundation helps keep its memory alive. They also have other buildings that carry on its history.
One of these is The Tegler Manor. It was built in 1982, the same year the original building was taken down. The Tegler Manor uses many of the original bricks from the old building. It also has a special mural by Ernest Huber. This painting shows what early life in Alberta was like. It used to be in the lobby of the original Tegler Building, above the elevators. Now, it's safe in The Tegler Manor.
