The Story of Teh Botol
How Sosro Tea Began
The Sosro brand gets its name from the Sosrodjojo family. They are the owners of the company that makes Teh Botol. The family started their tea business way back in 1940. They began by selling jasmine tea in a small town called Slawi in Central Java province. Their very first tea brand was called Teh Cap Botol, which means "bottle brand tea."
A Clever Idea for Bottled Tea
In 1965, the Sosro company wanted to introduce their Cap Botol jasmine tea to the big city of Jakarta. They decided to give out free samples, a promotion they called cicip rasa (which means "taste test").
At first, they brewed the tea right there on the spot for people to try. But brewing tea takes time, and some customers didn't want to wait. To solve this, the staff started brewing the tea at their office. Then, they would pour the ready-to-drink tea into large pots and pans to take to the promotion spots.
However, this didn't work perfectly either. The tea would often spill on the way! So, they tried something new. They put the brewed jasmine tea into clean, used glass bottles. These bottles were usually used for things like soda or soy sauce. This idea was a huge success! It led to the creation of the "bottled tea" or teh botol brand name in 1969. The official name became Teh Botol Sosro.
The Famous Bottle Design
The very first official Teh Botol bottles were introduced in 1970. Just two years later, in 1972, the company updated the design of their bottles.
Then, in 1974, a new company called PT Sinar Sosro was started. This company was specifically created to produce Teh Botol Sosro. At this time, they redesigned the bottle once more. This bottle design is still used today, making it a classic look for the popular Indonesian drink.
