Teige-an-Duna MacCarthy facts for kids
Teige-an-Duna MacCarthy (born 1584 – died 24 May 1649) was an important Irish leader. He was known as the Lord of Glean-na-Chroim. He was the last leader of his family branch in Dunmanway to hold full power. This family was part of the MacCarthy Reagh dynasty in Carbery. He was their Prince from 1618 until 1648.
Teige-an-Duna was also called Teige the Hospicious. This was because he was very welcoming to guests. His other name, an Duna, means "of the Fortress".
During the Irish Rebellion of 1641, Teige-an-Duna was a military leader. He was second in command of the MacCarthy Reagh army. Because of his role in the rebellion, his family lost their lands. This happened when the Cromwellian forces took over Ireland.
He was the son of Eleanor MacSheehy and Teige-an-Fhorsa MacCarthy. His father was also a Lord of Glean-na-Chroim.
His Family Life
Teige-an-Duna MacCarthy married twice. His first wife was a daughter of Brian mac Owen Mac Sweeny. They had two sons:
- Teige-an-Fhorsa II MacCarthy
- Dermod MacCarthy Glas, who started the MacCarthy Glas family line.
His second wife was Honoria. She was the daughter of Donal II O'Donovan. Honoria's mother was Lady Joanna MacCarthy Reagh. Teige-an-Duna and Honoria had more children:
- Honoria, who married Owen MacCarthy. Owen was the son of Donal of the Pipes, 13th Prince of Carbery.
- Joan, who married Cormac MacTadhg MacCarthy.
- Eoghan
- Ceallaghan, who lived in Dunmanway Castle in 1652.
