Telephlebia brevicauda is a type of dragonfly often called the southern evening darner. It belongs to a family of dragonflies known as Telephlebiidae. This dragonfly is a medium to large insect. It has a dark chestnut brown body. Its wings have dark marks along their front edges.

This special dragonfly is found only in eastern Australia. This means it is endemic to that area. You can find it in the alpine (mountain) regions of New South Wales and Victoria. It likes to live in wet, boggy places. You will often see it flying around when the sun is setting, at dusk.

The southern evening darner looks quite a lot like another dragonfly, Telephlebia godeffroyi.

What the Southern Evening Darner Looks Like

The southern evening darner is a medium to large dragonfly. Its body is a dark chestnut brown color. Its wings are clear, but they have dark markings. These marks are found along the leading (front) edge of the wings.

Where the Southern Evening Darner Lives

This dragonfly is only found in eastern Australia. It lives in the cooler, higher areas of New South Wales and Victoria. It especially likes places that are wet and marshy, like bogs. These are perfect homes for dragonflies.

When the Southern Evening Darner Flies

The southern evening darner gets its name because of when it flies. Unlike many other dragonflies that fly during the day, this one prefers the evening. You can often spot it flying around at dusk, as the sun goes down.
