Where is Telferner Located?
Telferner is found in Texas at these coordinates: 28°50′56″N 96°53′26″W / 28.84889°N 96.89056°W. It sits where two important roads meet: U.S. Highway 59 and FM 1686. This spot is about eight miles northeast of the city of Victoria.
The Story of Telferner
Telferner started in 1882. This was when a railway line, the New York, Texas and Mexican Railway, was finished. It connected Victoria to Rosenberg. The train station was built on a large piece of land called John N. Keeran's California Ranch.
How Telferner Got Its Name
At first, in 1895, a post office opened here, and the community was called Keeran. Later, in 1908, its name changed to Jasmine. But soon after, it changed again to Telferner. This new name honored an Italian count named Joseph Telferner. He was the president and one of the people who helped build the railway.
Telferner's Population Changes
By 1904, about 100 people lived in Telferner. There were five stores, a cotton gin (a machine that separates cotton fibers), and a lumberyard. Even though oil was found nearby, the number of people living there went down for a while. However, by 1985, the population grew back to about 300. By 2000, it had reached around 700 people.
Telferner still has its own post office today, with the ZIP code 77988.
