What is Telica Volcano Like?
Telica volcano has six different peaks, or cones. The tallest of these cones reaches 1,036 meters (about 3,399 feet) high. At the very top, there is a large double crater. This crater is about 700 meters (2,297 feet) wide and 120 meters (394 feet) deep.
Telica's Eruptions Over Time
Telica has been erupting frequently ever since the Spanish arrived in the Americas. The most recent eruption happened in 2022.
The biggest eruption ever recorded for Telica was in 1529. This eruption was very powerful, rated as a 4 on the Volcanic Explosivity Index. This index measures how big and strong a volcanic eruption is.
Recent Activity: 1999-2007
Telica became very active in August 1999. An eruption sent ash falling from the sky. On August 18, people could see a pool of hot, melted rock, called a lava lake, inside the main crater. The ash eruptions continued until February 2000, then slowly stopped.
From January to February 2007, there were more small ash eruptions. These eruptions created ash clouds that rose up to 1.5 kilometers (about 4,900 feet) into the air.
Recent Activity: 2015
On May 7, 2015, Telica's activity increased again. There were explosions and small earthquakes. These explosions released gas and volcanic ash.
On the night of May 10, a larger explosion happened. This explosion covered nearby towns with a layer of ash. The volcano continued to have many small eruptions over the next few months. One eruption on September 23 caused ash to fall in the city of León. Luckily, no major damage or injuries were reported from these events.
Visiting Telica Volcano
Telica volcano is quite close to the city of León. This makes it a popular spot for tourists and hikers. Most people who hike Telica start their journey from a small town called San Jacinto.
San Jacinto is famous for its bubbling mud pits. These pits are areas where hot mud and gases bubble up from underground. There is also a small power plant nearby that uses the heat from the Earth to make electricity.
