The Temple of the Sun is an amazing ancient Maya temple. It is located in the historic city of Palenque in Chiapas, Mexico. This special building was created to honor K'inich Taj Wayib', the Maya sun god. He was also known as God GIII.

The temple was built in the late 600s, during the time of a ruler named K'inich Kan Bahlam II. It was part of a larger area called the Temple of the Cross Complex. This complex had three main temples, each dedicated to one of Palenque's most important gods. The Temple of the Sun specifically honored the sun god, K'inich Taj Wayib'. The Maya believed he was like a fiery jaguar that traveled into the underworld.

The Temple of the Sun is part of the Temple of the Cross Complex in Palenque. It stands alongside the Temple of the Cross and the Temple of the Foliated Cross. Many experts believe it is the best-preserved building in this entire complex.

This temple shows off the unique "Palenque style" of architecture. It has a base shaped like a stepped pyramid. At the very top of this pyramid, there is a temple building with three entrances. Inside the temple, you would find three rooms separated by walls. The most important room holds a large stone panel. This panel is famous as the Tablet of the Sun. It features images and symbols connected to the powerful sun god.
