What's in a Name?
The name Tempoal comes from the Wastek language. The Wastek word Tam-puhal means "place of toads."
The second part of the name, "de Sánchez," honors a brave person named Rafael Platón Sánchez. He was born near Tempoal in 1831. Rafael Platón Sánchez was a soldier who fought in the famous Battle of Puebla on May 5, 1862. Later, he was in charge of a special court. This court decided the fate of Emperor Maximilian and his generals. They were sentenced to death in 1867.
A Look at Tempoal's History
Tempoal has a very long history. It was first settled a long time ago, even before the Spanish arrived. This means people lived there in "pre-Hispanic" times.
Over the years, Tempoal grew. In 1927, it was officially recognized as a "town" (called a villa). Then, in 1960, it became a "city" (called a ciudad). This showed that it had grown even more in size and importance.
