Ten Mile Rocks facts for kids

Kids Encyclopedia Facts

Ten Mile Rocks are a cool group of granite rocks in Western Australia. They are about 80 km (50 mi) east of Norseman and 111 km (69 mi) west of Balladonia. You can find them in the Goldfields-Esperance region, which is a big area known for its gold and beautiful landscapes.

What Are Ten Mile Rocks?

Ten Mile Rocks are part of a very old rock system called the Biranup Complex. This complex is a long belt of rocks that forms the edge of a huge, ancient piece of Earth's crust called the Yilgarn craton. The rocks themselves are made of a type of granite called Garnet-biotite monzogranite gneiss. These rocks are super old, about 1,670 million years old! That's older than dinosaurs, older than trees, and even older than most mountains we see today.

Camping at Ten Mile Rocks

If you're traveling along the Eyre Highway, Ten Mile Rocks is a great spot to stop and rest. There's a camping area just 100 m (330 ft) off the highway. It's on the eastern side of the Fraser Range, which is a chain of hills.

The campsite has some helpful facilities for visitors:

  • Toilets
  • Picnic tables
  • Barbeques

There's enough space for about 30 vehicles, so it's a good place for families or groups to pull over and enjoy nature.

Cultural Importance

Ten Mile Rocks is a very special place for the Ngadjunmaia people. They are the traditional owners of this land. On the south side of the rocks, there are areas that have been used for important cultural gatherings and ceremonies for a very long time. These spots have been cleared of sticks and stones, and you can see many old campfires around them. This shows how important the area has been to the Ngadjunmaia people for generations. It's a place where their history and culture are deeply connected to the land.
