The Tenement House

The Tenement House is a special place in Glasgow, Scotland. It's like a time capsule! It's a historic house museum, which means it's a home kept exactly as it was a long time ago. This museum is looked after by the National Trust for Scotland, a group that protects important places.

This unique flat is at 145 Buccleuch Street, in an area called Garnethill. It's easy to find, close to Charing Cross railway station and Cowcaddens subway station. The building itself is an old "tenement" from 1892. A tenement is a large building divided into several flats, where many families lived. This particular flat shows what life was like in the early 1900s.

A woman named Agnes Toward lived in this flat from 1911 until 1965. She kept everything just as it was, from her furniture to her everyday items. After she passed away, the National Trust for Scotland took over the flat and all its contents. They opened it to the public so people could see how ordinary Glaswegians lived in the past. In 2019, over 23,000 people visited this amazing museum!

Exploring the Tenement House

When you visit the Tenement House, you step back in time. It's not a fancy mansion, but a real home. It shows how people lived their daily lives in a city flat.

Life in a Glasgow Tenement

Imagine living without modern heating or a fridge! The Tenement House helps you understand this. You can see the old kitchen with its coal-fired range. This was used for cooking and heating water. The flat also has a small, shared toilet on the landing outside. This was common in tenements.

Agnes Toward's Story

Agnes Toward was a typist, which was a job involving a typewriter. She lived in the flat for over 50 years. She was very careful with her belongings. Because of this, her home stayed almost exactly the same for decades. This is why it's such a valuable museum today. It gives us a real peek into the past.
