Tengiz Sigua (born November 9, 1934 – died January 21, 2020) was an important Georgian politician. He served as the Prime Minister of Georgia from 1992 to 1993.
Sigua was an engineer by profession. He became involved in politics just before the Soviet Union broke apart. In 1990, he led a group of experts for a political group called "Round Table-Free Georgia." After the first elections in Georgia where many parties could run, he was chosen as the Head of the Ministers' Council of the Georgian Soviet Socialist Republic on November 14, 1990.
He was the Prime Minister in Zviad Gamsakhurdia's government from November 15, 1990, to August 18, 1991. However, he resigned in August 1991 because he disagreed with the president. Later, along with National Guard leader Tengiz Kitovani and paramilitary leader Jaba Ioseliani, he became a key figure in the opposition. This group led a major change in government against the President in December 1991 and January 1992.
After Gamsakhurdia's government fell, Sigua became Prime Minister again. This was in the new interim government of Georgia, which was later joined by Eduard Shevardnadze, on January 6, 1992. He was chosen again as Prime Minister on November 8, 1992, by the newly elected Parliament.
He resigned on August 6, 1993. This happened after the Parliament did not approve the government's budget plan. He continued to serve as a Member of Parliament (MP). He also led an opposition political party called the National Liberation Front. He supported using military action to solve the conflict in the Abkhazia region.
In an interview, Sigua shared his thoughts on the 2008 conflict. He stated that he believed the Georgian side started the conflict. He said that shelling the city of Tskhinvali gave Russian troops a reason to get involved.
