What is a Tension Headache?
A tension headache is a mild to moderate pain that feels like a tight band around your head. It's the most common kind of headache. Unlike a migraine, tension headaches usually don't cause nausea (feeling sick to your stomach) or sensitivity to light and sound.
Why Do People Get Tension Headaches?
Tension headaches can happen for different reasons. Here are some common causes:
- Stress: Feeling worried or stressed about school, friends, or other things can often lead to a tension headache.
- Skipping Meals: Not eating at regular times or going too long without food can sometimes trigger a headache.
- Too Much Caffeine: Drinking a lot of caffeine from things like soda or coffee can sometimes cause headaches, especially if you usually drink a lot and then stop.
- Feeling Down or Worried: Sometimes, feeling sad (depression) or very worried (anxiety) can make you more likely to get tension headaches.
How to Feel Better?
If you get a tension headache, there are ways to help yourself feel better. Resting in a quiet, dark room can help. Sometimes, a warm bath or a gentle massage on your neck and shoulders can also ease the tension. It's also important to drink enough water and try to relax.
