Teodor Regedziński (born April 28, 1894 – died August 2, 1954) was a talented Polish chess player. He was known as a chess master, which means he was a very skilled and experienced player. Teodor was of German background.

Early Life and Chess Beginnings

Teodor Regedziński was born in Poland, near the city of Łódź. His family had German roots. He moved to Łódź in 1908 and joined a local chess club called the Łódź Association of Devotees of the Game of Chess.

He quickly showed his talent. In 1912, he placed second in an unofficial city championship. He finished just behind another strong player, Gersz Salwe.

During World War I, Teodor was held for a short time by Austrian forces. However, he was released in 1916. After returning to chess, he continued to improve. He took third place in his club's championship in 1917. Then, he won the club championship in both 1918 and 1919.

Polish Chess Championships

Teodor Regedziński played in all four Polish Chess Championships held before World War II. These were important tournaments for chess players in Poland.

  • In 1926, he tied for 3rd to 7th place in the first Polish Championship in Warsaw.
  • In 1927, he came in 4th place in the second Polish Championship, held in Łódź.

At the 2nd Chess Olympiad in The Hague in 1928, Teodor played very well. He won 10 out of 13 games. This great performance earned him the third-place prize for the best individual score.

1933 Olympiad: Folkestone

In 1933, he played at the 5th Chess Olympiad in Folkestone. He continued to be a strong player for his team.

1936 Unofficial Olympiad: Munich

In 1936, Poland won the silver medal at an unofficial Olympiad in Munich. Teodor played on the third board and helped his team achieve this success. He won 9 games, lost 2, and drew 7.

1937 Olympiad: Stockholm

Teodor had one of his best performances at the 7th Chess Olympiad in Stockholm in 1937. He scored an amazing 11 out of 13 points. He won 10 games, lost only 1, and drew 2. This earned him the second prize for the best result on his board and the third best result overall in the entire tournament.

1939 Olympiad: Buenos Aires

His last Olympiad was the 8th Chess Olympiad in Buenos Aires in 1939. He played on the fourth board and won an individual bronze medal for his performance.

Life During and After World War II

During World War II, Teodor Regedziński continued to play chess under the name Theodore Reger. He took part in several tournaments, including the German Chess Championship in 1940. He also played in a tournament in Kraków/Warsaw in 1941.

Because he could speak many languages (Polish, German, Russian, English, and French), he worked as an interpreter for the German Army.

After the war ended, Teodor returned to Łódź. He faced a difficult time and was arrested. He was sentenced to a labor camp. The time he spent in prison greatly affected his health.

In the late 1940s, he became active in chess again. He spent much of his time working as a chess activist, helping to promote the game. In 1952, he won the championship of Łódź once more. He also took 5th place in the 10th Polish Championship in Katowice.
