Tepexpan is a large town in the Acolman area of the State of Mexico, Mexico. It is an important place with a rich history. In 2005, about 48,103 people lived there.

Discovering Ancient Life in Tepexpan

One of the most exciting things about Tepexpan is the discovery of an ancient human skeleton. This skeleton is often called "Tepexpan man". It was found many years ago.

The Mystery of Tepexpan's Ancient Skeleton

Scientists have been studying this skeleton closely. Some recent research suggests the skeleton might actually be that of a woman, not a man. This person lived a very long time ago, around 11,000 BCE. It seems they might have been trampled by a huge, powerful animal called a mastodon.

A Mexican archaeologist used DNA to suggest the skeleton was a woman. However, other scientists are still looking at this idea. They need more studies to confirm if it was a man or a woman.

How Ancient Hunters Caught Mammoths

Tepexpan and a nearby place called Santa Isabel Ixtapan were once "mammoth kill sites." This means ancient people hunted mammoths here. Mammoths were huge, hairy animals, like elephants.

Hunters would guide these giant animals into muddy areas or bogs. The thick mud would slow the mammoths down. Then, the hunters could use special sharp tools, called fluted points, to hunt them. This happened between 9000 BCE and 7000 BCE.

Tepexpan's Important Resources

Tepexpan is a very important town in the Acolman region. It has many natural resources. Two important resources found here are obsidian and pewter.

  • Obsidian: This is a dark, glassy rock. Ancient people used obsidian to make sharp tools and weapons.
  • Pewter: This is a metal alloy, often used to make dishes and decorative items.

Santa Maria Magdalena Church

Tepexpan has a beautiful church called Santa Maria Magdalena. It is located right near the town's main plaza. This church is one of the oldest in the region. It was built very early, soon after the Spanish arrived in Mexico.

Tepexpan's Districts

Tepexpan is divided into five main areas, or districts. These districts help organize the town.

  • Anahuac 1 Sección (Tepexpan)
  • Anahuac II Sección (Tepexpan)
  • Chimalpa (Tepexpan)
  • Los Reyes (Tepexpan)
  • Paraje El Faro
