María Teresa Giménez Barbat (born June 4, 1955, in Barcelona, Spain) is a Spanish writer, anthropologist, and politician. She supports ideas like secular humanism, which means living ethically and making decisions based on reason, not religion. She also believes in scepticism, which means questioning things and looking for proof.
Teresa writes in two languages: Spanish and Catalan. She is a member of a Spanish political party called Union, Progress and Democracy (UPyD). Before joining UPyD, she was involved in groups in Catalonia that were against nationalism, which is a strong belief in one's own nation being superior.
Her Life and Work
Teresa studied at the University of Barcelona, where she earned a degree in anthropology. Anthropology is the study of human societies, cultures, and their development.
In 2008, she helped start an organization called "Third Culture." The next year, in 2009, she promoted the "Secular Humanism Forum." Both groups work to encourage ethical thinking that is separate from religious beliefs.
In 2006, she became a part of the leadership team for a political party called Citizens of Catalonia. This was a new party that did not support nationalism. Later, when UPyD was formed with similar ideas, she joined them. Since 2012, she has been a leader for the UPyD party in Catalonia. She was also one of the candidates for UPyD in the 2009 European Parliament Election.
