About Tern Island

Tern Island is a tiny piece of land in the vast ocean. It's known for its unique plant life, especially the tussock grass that covers it. This island is part of the beautiful and wild South Georgia, a remote group of islands in the southern Atlantic Ocean.

Where is Tern Island?

Tern Island is situated in the Bay of Isles, a large bay on the northern coast of South Georgia. This area is famous for its amazing wildlife. The island's exact location is 54°3′ South and 37°20′ West. It's a small island, but an important part of the local ecosystem.

How Tern Island Got Its Name

Tern Island was first mapped between 1912 and 1913. This was done by Robert Cushman Murphy, an American naturalist. He was exploring the area on a ship called the Daisy.

Later, from 1929 to 1930, people from the Discovery Investigations (DI) surveyed the island. They gave it the name "Tern Island." This name was chosen because it's near other islands named after birds, like Albatross Island and Prion Island. Robert Cushman Murphy had given these bird-related names to places in the Bay of Isles back in 1912–13.
