How Terrance Hobbs Plays Guitar
Terrance Hobbs is well-known in the world of heavy metal music. He combines fast, repeated guitar riffs with other tricky and unexpected patterns. A "riff" is a short, repeated musical idea.
His way of playing helped create a style called "technical death metal." This style uses very complex and skilled guitar playing. Terrance once said that as bands played faster, he and his bandmates really liked it. They thought it was amazing.
Guitar Solos and Techniques
Terrance's guitar solos are often very fast and skillful. This style is sometimes called "shred guitar." He often uses a special bar on his guitar called a tremolo bar. This bar helps him create sounds like "divebombs" (a falling pitch sound) and "trills" (quickly repeating two notes).
His album Pierced from Within shows many examples of these techniques. It has powerful, rhythmic sections called "breakdowns" and complex riffs. Other albums like Effigy of the Forgotten and Souls to Deny also feature his layered riffs and melodies.
Terrance's Guitar Gear
Terrance Hobbs mainly uses a special B.C. Rich Warlock guitar. This guitar has a Floyd Rose locking tremolo system. It also has a DiMarzio Super Distortion pickup, which helps make the guitar sound powerful.
He uses Gotoh tuners to keep his guitar in tune and D'Addario strings. For his sound, he uses a Maxon OD-9 overdrive pedal and a Boss NS-2 Noise Suppressor pedal. His guitar sound comes from a Peavey 6505+ amplifier played through Vader cabinets.
