Terry M. Bellamy is a former mayor of Asheville, North Carolina. A mayor is the leader of a city government. She was first chosen to be on the Asheville City Council in 1999. The City Council helps make decisions for the city. She was elected again in 2003.

In November 2005, Terry Bellamy was elected mayor. She won against the mayor at that time, Charles Worley. When she became mayor, she was 33 years old. This made her the youngest mayor in North Carolina. She was also the first African-American Mayor of Asheville. She won re-election in 2009.

Terry Bellamy decided not to run for mayor again in 2013. Instead, she planned to run for the U.S. House of Representatives.

Terry Bellamy grew up in Asheville. She studied English at the University of North Carolina at Charlotte. She is married to Lamont Bellamy and they have two children. She has worked as a Marketing Manager for Mountain Housing Opportunities. She also worked as a Financial Manager for Diamond Executive Car Transportation Service.

During her time as mayor, Terry Bellamy worked on several important projects for Asheville.

Community Projects and Improvements

  • She worked with people in the West Riverside Neighborhood. They received a special program called "Weed and Seed" from the United States Department of Justice. This program helps communities grow stronger and safer.
  • She was very involved in planning the City of Asheville Youth Leadership Academy. This program helps young people in the city become leaders.
  • She helped put in place a plan for $40 million to improve the city's water system. This helped make sure the community had good water for a long time.
