Tess Lieder, whose maiden name was Wester, is a famous Dutch handball player. She was born on May 19, 1993. Tess played as a goalkeeper for the Dutch national team for many years. She is now retired from playing.

Tess was a key player in the Dutch team that won the 2019 World Women's Handball Championship. This was a huge win, the first world title for her country in handball! She also helped her team win a silver medal at the 2015 World Women's Handball Championship. In that tournament, she was the best goalkeeper for saving shots. Tess also played in the 2016 Summer Olympics, where her team finished in fourth place.

Tess Lieder's Handball Journey

Tess Lieder started playing handball when she was very young. She began her career in 1999 at a club called Hugo Girls. At that time, she was only about 5 or 6 years old. As she grew up, she also played for other youth teams like VZV and HandbalAcademie.

Early Club Career

Tess played for VOC Amsterdam in the 2008–09 season. With this team, she even got to play in the EHF Champions League. This is a very important competition for handball clubs in Europe. From 2010 to 2011, she played for E&O Emmen.

In 2011, Tess moved to Germany to play for VfL Oldenburg. She stayed with this club until 2015. During her time there, her team won the German Cup in 2012. After that, she joined another German club, SG BBM Bietigheim. With them, she won the Bundesliga title, which is the top league in Germany. She also played in the Champions League again.

Moving to Denmark and Romania

In 2018, Tess decided to try a new challenge. She signed a contract with a strong Danish team called Odense Håndbold. There, she helped her team win the Danish championship in 2021. This was the first time that club had ever won a national title!

After her contract with Odense ended in 2021, Tess moved to Romania. She joined the club CSM București. She said she chose this club because it was a top team with high expectations. She liked that the club wanted to win the Champions League and had experience doing so.

Retirement from Handball

In April 2022, Tess announced that she would be leaving CSM București at the end of the season. She wanted to move closer to her home country, the Netherlands. In May 2022, she shared exciting news on Instagram: she was expecting her first child!

In April 2025, Tess announced that she planned to retire from handball after the 2024-25 season. She wanted to spend more time with her family.

Playing for the Netherlands

Tess Lieder first played for the Dutch national team in October 2012. Her first game was a friendly match against Romania.

World Championship Success

She was a big part of the Dutch team at the 2015 World Women's Handball Championship. Her team reached the final but lost to Norway. Even though they didn't win gold, Tess was amazing. She was the goalkeeper with the highest percentage of saves in the whole tournament!

In 2019, Tess helped the Dutch team win gold medals at the 2019 World Women's Handball Championship. This was a historic moment, as it was the first time the Netherlands had ever won this championship. In the final game, there was a very exciting moment. With seconds left and the score tied, Tess was involved in a play that led to a penalty shot. Her teammate, Lois Abbingh, scored the penalty, winning the game for the Netherlands!

Olympic Games and European Championships

Tess also represented the Netherlands at the 2016 Summer Olympics. Her team played very well and reached the semi-finals. They lost a close game to France and then lost the bronze medal match to Norway, finishing in fourth place.

She also won silver and bronze medals at the European Women's Handball Championships.
