Teuea Toatu is a politician from Kiribati. He has been the Vice President of Kiribati since 2019. He is also a member of the country's parliament, called the House of Assembly. Since 2016, he has served as the Minister for Finance and Economic Development. Before joining the parliament, he worked in different roles related to finance and economics in Kiribati.

Early Life and Education
Teuea Toatu studied at several universities. In 1980, he earned a degree in accounting and economics from the University of the South Pacific. He also received a certificate in computing from the University of East Anglia in 1984. Later, in 1987, he completed a master's degree in finance at the University of Strathclyde.
Political Career and Public Service
Toatu began his career working for the government of Kiribati. His first role was as a principal auditor. From 1988 to 1991, he served as the Deputy Secretary in the Ministry of Finance and Economic Development.
He also held important positions on financial boards. He was the chairman of the board for the Kiribati National Provident Fund. He also served as the deputy chairman for the Development Bank of Kiribati. In 1991, he became a program coordinator for the South Pacific Applied Geoscience Commission.
Joining the House of Assembly
In the 2016 election, Teuea Toatu won a seat in the House of Assembly. He represented the Abaiang constituency. After the election, President Taneti Maamau appointed Toatu as the Minister of Finance and Economic Development in 2016.
Becoming Vice President
In 2019, the Vice President at the time, Kourabi Nenem, was removed from his position. This happened because he traveled to Indonesia without official permission. On June 19, 2019, Teuea Toatu was appointed to take his place as the Vice-President of Kiribati. He also continued to serve as the Minister of Finance and Economic Development.
