Tevin Farmer's Boxing Journey
Tevin Farmer started his professional boxing career when he was 19 years old. He has shared that he didn't take boxing very seriously at the beginning. This led to some losses early in his career.
Becoming a World Champion
After 2012, Farmer did not lose any more fights for a long time. This helped him get a chance to fight for a world title. In December 2017, he fought Kenichi Ogawa for the IBF super featherweight world title. Farmer lost this fight at first. However, the result was later changed to "no contest." This happened because his opponent, Ogawa, had failed a drug test before the fight.
In August 2018, Tevin Farmer traveled to Australia. There, he fought Billy Dib in Sydney and won the vacant IBF super featherweight title. This was a big moment for him. Around the same time, Farmer signed a deal with two boxing companies: Dibella Entertainment and Eddie Hearn's Matchroom Boxing USA. His first fight under this new deal was shown on a new sports streaming service called DAZN.
Defending His Title
On March 15, 2019, Tevin Farmer defended his IBF super featherweight title against Jono Carroll. Carroll was a tough fighter, and the match was close. But Farmer showed his skill and won the fight clearly. All three judges scored the fight in his favor.
His fourth time defending the title was against Guillaume Frenois. Farmer won this fight by a unanimous decision too. This means all the judges agreed he was the winner.
Losing the Title
On January 30, 2020, Farmer defended his title against Joseph Diaz Jr. Things did not go well for Farmer in this fight. After the first round, he told his corner that he had broken his hand. Diaz Jr. used this to his advantage and outboxed Farmer for most of the fight. Joseph Diaz Jr. won the fight by unanimous decision, becoming the new world champion.
About Tevin Farmer's Life
Tevin Farmer has a famous relative: his great-uncle was Joe Gans. Joe Gans was the first Black American born in the United States to win a world boxing title.
In July 2017, Farmer had a serious injury that could have ended his boxing career. He was shot in the hand during an argument at his niece's birthday party. He had tried to take a gun away from someone. Doctors told him he might never be able to box again. But Farmer worked hard and proved them wrong, returning to the ring.
