What Does It Look Like?
This plant gets its name because it looks like a ragged brush dipped in red paint. The bright red parts are not actually flowers. They are special leaf-like parts called bracts. How Does It Grow?
Each Texas Indian paintbrush plant usually grows to be about 30 to 45 centimeters (12 to 18 inches) tall. Its leaves are long and do not have stalks. The roots of the paintbrush grow until they find the roots of other plants, usually grasses. Then, the paintbrush's roots connect to the "host" plant's roots. This allows the paintbrush to take some of the nutrients it needs from the host plant. This is how it shares food with its neighbors!
Where Can You Find It?
The Texas Indian paintbrush usually blooms in the early to middle part of spring. It grows best in sunny areas where the soil drains well.
