The Texas Renaissance Festival (TRF) is a super fun annual event in Todd Mission, Texas. It's like stepping back in time to the Renaissance period! This huge festival is about 55 miles northwest of Houston.

TRF began way back in 1974 on what used to be an old mining area. Today, it's known as "the nation’s largest Renaissance theme park." The festival covers 55 acres of land. It also has over 200 acres of camping spots for visitors. More than half a million people visit this amazing festival every year.

History of the Festival

The Texas Renaissance Festival was started in 1974 by two brothers, George and David Coulam. They chose an old mining spot in what is now Todd Mission, Texas. When it first opened, the festival was 15 acres big. It had three stages where small acting groups performed. Merchants sold their goods right on blankets. About 33,000 people came to the very first festival.

In 2008, the festival did not happen because of a big storm. Since 2020, the festival has added extra safety steps for everyone's health.

What You Can See and Do

As of 2017, the Texas Renaissance Festival has about 500 actors dressed in amazing costumes. They perform on 25 different stages! There are also 350 shops right at the festival. You can find all sorts of things there, like yummy international foods and unique handmade crafts.

The festival also has rides that use human power. Many performers walk around, entertaining guests as they explore. Each day ends with a special Queen's Royal Finale. This show often includes fireworks, if the weather is good. Over half a million people visit the fair each year. In 2016, a record 679,000 people attended!
